How to Read the Bible When You Feel Lost
There are times when opening the Bible feels more confusing than comforting. You want to hear from God, but you’re not sure where to start — or you’ve tried before and found it hard to stay consistent. If that’s you, you’re not alone. Every believer walks through seasons where reading God’s Word feels difficult.
The good news is that the same God who gave us His Word also helps us understand it. The Bible was written for real people — people who needed guidance, encouragement, correction, and hope. You don’t need to be a scholar to hear from Him; you simply need a willing heart.
1. Ask God to Speak Before You Read
Psalm 119:18 (KJV)
Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.
Before you begin, take a moment to pray.
Ask God to open your understanding and help you see what He wants to show you.
A humble heart prepares the way for a clear mind.
2. Start Small and Stay Consistent
Isaiah 28:10 (KJV)
For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little.
Start with short passages — even a few verses a day.
Consistency matters more than speed.
You’ll be amazed how much God can reveal through just a few faithful minutes with Him each day.
3. Begin with the Gospels
John 20:31 (KJV)
But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
If you’re not sure where to start, begin with the life of Jesus — Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John.
Reading the Gospels helps you know who He is, how He loves, and what it truly means to follow Him.
4. Write Down What Stands Out
Keep a small notebook or journal nearby.
Write down verses, questions, or truths that speak to you.
Sometimes God’s Word begins to make sense as you see it on paper and return to it later in prayer.
5. Remember the Goal
The goal is not to “get through” the Bible — it’s to let the Bible get through to you.
God’s Word isn’t just information; it’s transformation.
Every time you read, you’re inviting His voice to shape your heart.
A Simple Prayer Before You Read
Lord, open my eyes and my heart to Your Word today.
Help me understand what I read and apply it to my life.
Teach me, correct me, and draw me closer to You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
If reading the Bible has felt overwhelming, start again today — small steps, simple prayers, and an open heart. God loves to meet His children in His Word, one verse at a time.
You don’t have to have it all figured out — you just have to start.
